Otro Mundo Es Posible: Why do we need to imagine an alternative to the global economy?
Participatory Workshop
Sunday 25 October 2026
10:30am - 11:45am
Conf Room B, Conference Center
CONCURRENT SESSION 8
Facilitator: Pablo G, Postgrowth Futures
This participatory workshop invites the audience to imagine an alternative economy where collective well-being is a priority over capital profit. We will start naming and confronting some of the challenges, rising global emissions and social inequalities, and then we will transition into what a hopeful vision of the future looks like. It invites people to reflect on what a thriving place looks like and what do we need to get there while caring for our environment and its people. This workshop integrates concepts from solidarity economy, degrowth and doughnut economics. Through participatory activities, story telling and art, we will reflect on what things are going well in our communities and what things need to be addressed. Participants that are already involved in community efforts will have the opportunity to share and reflect how their work is contributing to a more sustainable and equitable community that prioritizes well being over profit. Participants that are not yet involved in community organizing will have an opportunity to envision what that would look like and where to start.
Part of the Imagining America National Gathering: an annual convening of public scholars, artists, designers, students, and cultural organizers who are addressing the most pressing issues of our time. The gathering offers participants a three-day immersive experience in which to connect, dialogue, learn, and strategize around the ways to build new knowledge and inspire collective imagination towards transformative education and action.

A day of collaborative, community learning with young climate leaders, environmental justice activists, UCES conference colleagues, and visiting allies — hosted by Su’nan The SPACE. “Su’nan” means “to continue” in the Šmuwič language of the Syuxtun area. The SPACE welcomed visitors from across the state, creating an opportunity to deepen our awareness and to re-engage with our relationships to land, with each other, and with the places where we live and work. As well as making prayer offerings, we learned about and worked with tule grasses, grounded in and guided by personal histories of what is currently known as Santa Barbara.
